How to keep mentally active
Studies have shown that
keeping mentally active can reduce the risk of memory problems and delay the onset of illnesses such as
Alzheimers. Particularly if you live on your own, this isn’t always easy, so here are some easy ways to stay
more mentally active.
1. Turn off the TV
It may seem like great
company but TV doesn’t increase brain activity. Radio has been shown to cause more brain activity, so try
listening to a radio program sometimes for a change.
2. Talk
Not always easy if you live
on your own, but having conversations with people really does keep the brain active. Try and find as many
occasions to chat to people as you can.
3. Puzzles and games
My grandmother had a
neighbour who used to come and play draughts with her twice a week. If that isn’t possible then try and get some
puzzle books. Wordsearches, crosswords and sudoko are great ways of keeping the mind busy and active.
4. Listen to music
Actively listen. Try and
pick out different instruments and different melodies and rhythms. Think about how the music makes you feel and
what images come into your head. Do some instruments create different feelings from others?
5. The written word
Reading is great for
keeping your mind active. Fiction or non-fiction, if it is something you are interested in then it is really
good for you. Writing is also very good exercise for the brain. Perhaps you could start writing memoirs or the
stories that have always been in your head.
There are many ways to stay
mentally active, and it’s useful to remember that the brain is an organ like any other, and the more exercise
you give it, the fitter you stay.
