Keeping safe in your home

One of the big worries for people these days is crime. There are a number of things you can do to minimise the risk of crime happening to you, and most of them cost very little.

Firstly, make sure you have locks on your windows. Even if you don’t have double glazing there are still locks you can buy very cheaply. Deadlocks on external doors are very good too, and much more secure than yale locks.

Another thing you can do is install a chain on your front door, and more importantly, use it. Never open the door to anyone unless you know them personally or they show you ID. Call their office if you aren’t sure. If they are genuinely who they say they are, they won’t have a problem with this.

Outside lighting is also a very good crime prevention aid. If you are worried about the cost of the electricity, you can look at solar lighting which is available now. Lights that are movement sensitive are also good and can be adjusted so that animals don’t set them off.

It is possible to get emergency alarms. Some can be installed as push buttons or pull cords, which go through to a control centre, others can be worn around the neck. A mobile phone or cordless phone is also useful. Always make sure you have emergency numbers programmed into your phone to make it easier to call.

The most important thing you can do to be safe is to be aware. Crime still rare but it does happen, and by following these tips you should stay safe.
