Living
Independently in Hertfordshire
Making the decision to move into a Care
Home may seem the right one at this time but it may not be
the best solution and you should consider all the
alternatives first.
We know that older people do not
necessarily want to go straight into care but would rather
stay as independent as possible in their own homes. The
Hertfordshire County Council works along side many other
support organisations and aims to help older people to
remain at home by providing advice, support and care for as
long as possible. They are able to help provide respite care
at home or in a care home, day care, telecare, home care and
specialist equipment if needed.
The council can also provide Sheltered
Housing where people can remain living independently but
with the added assurance of a warden service to look in a
monitor them. Extra Care Sheltered Housing is also an option
they may be better then moving into a care home. Extra Care
Sheltered Housing is an area of expansion within
Hertfordshire with many more places becoming available over
the coming years.
Anyone who makes a housing application in
Herts may be eligible to receive help from the Supporting
People Programme. This has the aim of improving independence
and quality of life for people with extra needs in
Herts.
Much advice is available from Hospitals
and social work teams throughout Hertfordshire and many
repeatable organisations and voluntary groups can also offer
advice and support (see our resource
pages).
